<image:title>2019 artists like to 2019 page - Jeremy Okai Davis</image:title>
<image:caption>Jeremy Okai Davis was born in Charlotte, NC in 1979. From a young age art was an outlet and way of existing in the world. His passion for art and painting led him to college. After graduating and receiving a BFA in Painting from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in 2002 He spent 5 years in and around the city attempting to get his career going. In 2007 he moved to Portland, Oregon to pursue a more professional practice. In his work, color use and fidelity to his subjects make them feel alive, but without being too literal. He attempts to present portraits that invite further exploration and investigation. The work features text and graphic elements from time to time. His goal is to make paintings that challenge the way we view people of color. His current work is more focused on his personal life and the current cultural climate.</image:caption>

<image:title>2019 artists like to 2019 page - Miel-Margarita Paredes</image:title>
<image:caption>Miel-Margarita Paredes is a metalsmith, jewelry maker and stop-motion puppet skeleton builder. She was born in Suva, Fiji, where her neighbors owned a pig named Houdini because of his frequent attempts to escape into the mangrove swamp. Memories of that large smelly animal and the delicious dinner he became have stayed with Miel through her adult life, while she studied metalsmithing at California College of Art and Craft in Oakland and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Her metalwork incorporates the animal figure and traditional ornamental devices to interpret the ways in which we humans manipulate our environment to suit our needs; deconstructing and reconstructing both inanimate and animate objects. She lives with her husband, two children, two cats, six fish and is growing a wildflower garden outside her home studio window in Portland, Oregon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born and raised in sunny California, Lauren Prado spends most of her free time sewing in 75 degree weather. Prado uses fiber, yarn, and needles to create representations of the digital images/products that flood our online feeds. Prado was a high school teacher for three years, and that experience largely influenced her interest in pop culture and the millennial lifestyle that centers on technology, online presence, and self-presentation. Prado received her BFA from La Sierra University and is a current MFA candidate in the Visual Studies program at Pacific Northwest College of Art. She has most recently exhibited work in COP OR DROPl , a solo show in the Lodge Gallery and was featured in Radicle Magazines 2018 issue.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ryan Burghard gives new meanings to familiar objects and explores the value of serendipitous moments in our daily lives. Often employing mundane materials, his slight and seemingly invisible gestures question the nature of our relationships; both universal and personal, to time and to notions we have of permanence and impermanence. In his work, simple objects encourage contemplation and he suggests that complexity can be found in moments we often dismiss as banal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May Maylisa Cat is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans video, paintings, glass, and live performances. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, NY. <image:title>2020 Artists, link to 2020 page - Curtis Reid Henderson</image:title>
<image:caption>Curtis Reid Henderson is a multimedia sculptor, printmaker, and potter based in St. Johns, Portland Oregon. His work, rooted in the use of found, salvaged, and recycled materials, reflects upon and adds commentary to the lack of transparency in consumer manufacturing; without readily available replacement parts & schematics, goods and machinery around us are abandoned rather than reused or repaired. This self forged reliance on consumerism and consumption affects our disposition towards the industrial materials Curtis uses in his work. Through extensive exploration, the hidden value of these discarded objects can be visualized and reinterpreted. Curtis’ sculptures, functional objects, and prints cultivate a narrative around our place in post-industrial society and capture how institutional infrastructure and capitalism have shaped our culture.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Christina Kemp is a Portland based mixed media artist. She received her MFA in Sculpture from Arizona State University in 2017 and a BFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2011. Central to her work is the contrast in speed between the profit-driven productivity and instantaneousness of our society with the slow deliberateness of her process. Kemp obsessively dwells on mundane artifacts of contemporary life as a means of questioning the expectations of how time is spent.</image:caption>

They want to invite you into their brain. In it we explore mental illness, and the folk art of coping mechanisms. We investigate queerness and how it forms and severs multiple selves. We look to language and learn how to cheat at it. You are welcome to leave the brain at any time. Early on, Caryn learned to love junk and continues to collect discarded objects to inspire and inform their work. They have watched as cultural attitudes toward compulsive collecting have shifted as the word packrat made way for the word hoarder. As light begins to be shed on these phenomena and collectors are splintered off from hoarders and new denominations form, Caryn attempts to carve out a space to make mentally healthy compulsive work about junk. <image:caption>Maddy Dubin grew up in rural northern California, scavenging found materials from an early age. Maddy was never able to shake this impulse, and employs the same methods in their art practice today. This practice has provided the catalyst for connection to place, matter, the past, and people. While pursuing a BFA degree at CSU Chico, Maddy explored found sculpture, abstract ceramics, and meditative print-making. After graduating in 2018, they moved to Portland, OR to participate in a year-long emerging artist mentorship at Ash Street Project. Their work then began to embrace alternative methods of installation, collaboration, and performance. While in Portland, Maddy has spent time teaching, managing studios, assisting a wide variety of local artists, and advocating for underrepresented artists. Maddy is currently an integral part of Gather: Make: Shelter, a non-profit organization facilitating collaborative, creative projects with people experiencing houselessness and extreme poverty. Maddy leads art workshops, mentors artists, and organizes exhibitions, receptions and other events through Gather: Make: Shelter. Maddy’s own work has been exhibited extensively on the West Coast, most notably at, Russo Lee Gallery, PDX Contemporary, Ash Street Project, and Pottery Northwest. LEARN MORE</image:caption>

<image:title>2022 Artist page, link to 2022 page - Josh Sin</image:title>
<image:caption>Joshua is a Canadian-born artist/designer living in Portland, Oregon. Trained as an Industrial Designer, he’s spent 10+ years working in corporate America, leading advanced innovation projects in retail, sports, and technology. In his practice, he explores the tension between physical craft and digital space. He sculpts textiles from found materials and deconstructed used clothing, sewing new patterns and experimenting with traditional quilting and mending techniques to create new fashions. He then inserts his fashion into digital 3D universes, constructing mysterious characters and worlds around his clothing design. Ultimately, Josh’s work asks the viewer to question perception: What is old and new, trash and elegance, digital and reality, art and commercial. Joshua is currently experimenting with tufting guns, 3D scanning, and parametric design while researching his family’s immigrant stories, model minority identities, and corporate American culture.
